The United States of America, more commonly referred to as the USA or the US, is the most popular destination for international students and therefore has the largest international student population comprising of over 800,000 international students. From Hollywood, to major fast food chains and the emergence of some of the world’s most prominent technology companies, the country’s influence is felt globally and it’s no surprise that it is still the number one choice for international students.

Why Study in The US?

The United States is a leader in the Western world in innovation and education.  With a population approaching 325 million, the US is one of the most culturally diverse countries in the world and has thousands of higher education institutions spanning it’s 50 states.

Many of the universities in the US are leaders in the numerous ranking tables meaning that a qualification earned from a US institution will be highly regarded by employers worldwide. Cost of Studying and Living in The United States

The US is the most popular study destination and qualifications obtained at US institutions are held in high regard, which means that studying in the US can be very expensive. Depending on the program, students can expect to pay anywhere from $5,000 USD – $50,000, with the average annual tuition fees around $30,000 USD. As for cost of living, it is wholly dependent on the area in the country you are interested in studying. For instance, an apartment in a smaller town may be a lot more affordable than an apartment in New York City or Los Angeles. Students can expect to budget anywhere from $1,000-$3,000 per month for their living expenses, depending on where they study.

Visas

In order to study in the United States students must have a student visa. Depending on the course you have chosen to study and the type of school you plan to attend you will require either a F-1 visa or an M-1 visa.

If planning to study at a university or college, high school, private elementary school or another academic institution such as on a language training program then the F type student visa will be required. If planning to study at a vocational or other nonacademic institution then the M type student visa will be required.

Language

English is the language that is spoken at all universities and colleges in the United States. Due to the great deal of cultural and language diversity, many universities and colleges in the US will offer specialized programs and instructional courses for learning English.

New York City

Home to well-known universities such as Columbia University and New York University, New York City and its associated boroughs have become an ideal place for students from all over the world to study and learn. By offering various pockets of culture, language, heritage, music, art and history, New York City has something to offer anyone. It can be a bit pricey though, so those who are looking to live in New York City may consider living in a borough like Brooklyn or outside Manhattan.

Los Angeles

Often associated with the glamour of Hollywood and the California beach life, Los Angeles is a centre for some of the highest quality education in the country with institutions such as University of California Los Angeles, University of Southern California and California State University. Los Angeles really offers something for everyone in terms of culture, things to do, and boasts some of the greatest beaches in the country.
